Discover Chichén Itzá: Treasure of the Mayan World

Chichén Itzá is one of Mexico's most iconic archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the Yucatán Peninsula, this ancient Mayan urban center attracts millions of visitors each year, fascinated by its history, impressive architecture, and central role in Mesoamerican civilization.

A Window on Mayan History

Founded around the 6th century, Chichén Itzá was a political, economic, and religious center. Its name, meaning "mouth of the well of the Itzáes," refers to the sacred cenotes that surround the city and served as essential sources of water in this arid region.

During its heyday, between the 9th and 12th centuries, Chichén Itzá was a cosmopolitan city where diverse cultural influences converged, including Mayan and Toltec. The remaining buildings bear witness to this unique fusion.

The architectural wonders of Chichén Itzá

Among the most impressive structures of Chichén Itzá are:

1. El Castillo (or Temple of Kukulcán)

This step pyramid is probably the most famous image of the site. Designed with astronomical precision, it is dedicated to the feathered serpent god, Kukulcán. Twice a year, during the equinoxes, a play of light and shadow gives the illusion of a serpent descending the steps of the pyramid.

2. The Temple of Warriors

This building, surrounded by hundreds of carved columns, is a testimony to the military and ceremonial role of the city. The engravings show battle scenes and representations of gods.

3. The Great Pelota Playing Field

At 168 meters long, this court is the largest of its kind in Mesoamerica. The game of pelota had a deep religious significance, often linked to rituals symbolizing the cycle of life and death.

4. Sacred Cenotes

These natural wells were used for religious rituals, including sacrifices offered to the gods to obtain good harvests or abundant rains.
